Welcome to The Col Collective for Alpe d’Huez 13.2km and 21 bends up to 1850 metres As you can see the climb starts really hard, we’re straight into a 10 percent section and it’s like that for the first 2 kilometres, pick up the bends and it counts down from 21 bends all the way to the summit you have to hold your nerve basically from 21 bends down to 16 before it starts to ease off a touch as you get to La Garde. It’s got an average gradient of 8 percent and it really just holds that form after those first couple of kilometres not a lot of chance to catch your breath or get back in the green today we’re really blessed the mountain’s completely evolving and changing right before us, we’re climbing up through the clouds swirls of mist down there we put a special order of Col Collective mist in for you just to spice things up, it looks absolutely amazing. Just entered the village Huez, that’s with 8 bends to go we’ve got 4 kilometers to the summit and this a place where you can stop and fill your bottles so if you need to, make sure you take a bit of time re-stock, re-fuel, re-water at this point. The only real reference point you have on the mountain, is the signs on each bend they don’t actually tell you how many kilometres you’ve done or what the gradient is, all they tell you is who’s won on the mountain so they countdown to 21 all the way up to 0 so it’s a good idea just to have a quick look at the map beforehand just to try and gauge where you are otherwise it’s quite difficult to actually know where you are on the mountain. So what makes Alpe d’Huez so great? Well just the actual 21 bends carving their way up the side of the mountain just to think about all the battles and stories that have played out on these slopes it’s unbelievable really just to think that it’s not just legendary for the pros but it’s legendary for everyone. Since every day’s a school day, it actually seems there’s 2 summits on Alpe d’Huez, one down a kilometre and a half back there in the village but where the Tour de France and all those legendary stages actually finished just up here so if you put the hard work in make sure you get all the way to the top.
